Visual comparison of two storytelling frameworks: PPP (Problem–Path–Payoff) and Explosion (Normal–Explosion–New Normal)

In our latest Engaged By Design podcast episode, we explored two simple but powerful storytelling frameworks that help leaders connect more effectively: PPP and Explosion.

Each one has its strengths—and the best leaders learn to use both.

PPP: Problem → Path → Payoff

Developed from Michael’s MACRO Leadership framework, this model is short and sweet. It’s ideal for meetings, memos, and mentoring moments.

- Problem – What challenge are you or your team facing?
- Path – What did you try? What action did you take?
- Payoff – What changed? What was the outcome or insight?

🎯 Use PPP when you want to teach, coach, or clarify a process.

Explosion: Normal → Explosion → New Normal

Kindra Hall’s “Stories That Stick” introduces this structure with a little more drama:

- Normal – What was life or work like before?
- Explosion – What moment changed everything?
- New Normal – What does life look like now, after the shift?

🎯 Use Explosion when you want to inspire, shift mindsets, or anchor values.

Which One Should You Use?

It depends on your goal.

If you’re explaining a leadership decision? PPP works beautifully.
If you’re trying to share a personal insight or motivate your team? The Explosion format will stick with them.

Want to see both in action? In the episode, Michael and Vernon each tell three stories—using both frameworks—and get feedback from AI voice companions Sarah and Imogene.

Your Turn: Choose one of your own leadership moments. Try writing it out both ways. You might be surprised at what you discover.
