Innovation in education often sounds abstract—systems, data, frameworks—but behind every project are real people. In Episode 2 of the Engaged By Design Podcast, Dr. Cali Morrison reminds us of that truth with an unforgettable story: the birth of her daughter, Bryce, on the very day a major Gates Foundation grant for the PAR Framework was due.

As Cali recalls, she was the only one with the system passcodes and files. Even as her water broke, she logged back in, and with the help of colleagues, the grant was submitted. The Gates Foundation even granted a little grace in recognition of the extraordinary circumstances. From then on, Bryce became known as the 'PAR baby.'

This story highlights an important point: innovation is never just technical—it’s personal. Projects like Transparency by Design and the PAR Framework were shaped not just by data but by the dedication, sacrifice, and humanity of the people involved.

As educators and leaders, it’s worth remembering that every big initiative we undertake is carried forward by individuals balancing families, work, and unexpected life events. Innovation is messy, but it’s also deeply human.

👉 Listen to Episode 2 for Cali’s full account of the PAR baby story and what it reveals about the human side of educational change.
