How does someone trained in public relations end up shaping the future of higher education? For Dr. Cali Morrison, it all began with a missed job opportunity, a rural sociology class, and a chance interview at Montana State University’s Extension Service.

In our latest episode of the Engaged By Design Podcast, Cali shares how she stumbled into higher education “by happenstance” and quickly discovered a passion for helping adults learn in ways that fit real life. She tells the story of a sociology professor whose unconventional teaching methods made her think differently about engaged learning—even offering students the option to drink a vial of cow urine to earn an “A.”

That quirky anecdote led to deeper reflections about why clear learning objectives matter. In fact, one unclear project in her undergraduate program pushed Cali to change majors and ultimately set her on a path toward lifelong work in higher education.

Most importantly, Cali explains her personal “why”: a determination to make learning opportunities flexible, accessible, and meaningful for adults who balance careers and family responsibilities. Inspired by her father’s sacrifices and her mother’s determination to continue her own education, Cali has built her career around the belief that lifelong learning should never mean missing out on life.

This first part of our three-episode conversation highlights the pivotal moments, the teachers, and the personal values that shaped Cali’s career. It’s a story of unexpected turns, clarity born of confusion, and the power of asking “why” at the right time.
