Motivate Every Assignment: Use the AMP Checklist
Jun 13, 2025
So your assignment was clear, but the team didn’t bring their A-game. What happened?
Sometimes, the issue isn’t logistics—it’s motivation.
The best assignments aren’t just well-defined. They’re energizing. They tap into what drives people to do their best work. That’s where the AMP Motivation Checklist comes in.
Originally introduced by Daniel Pink in Drive, and adapted into the Assign chapter of MACRO Leadership, AMP stands for:
🔑 Autonomy, Mastery, Purpose
- Autonomy – Do I have room to own this?
- Mastery – Will this grow my skills?
- Purpose – Does this matter to something bigger?
Before you delegate your next task or project, take a minute to run it through this lens. If the work doesn’t connect to at least one of these motivators, your team might comply, but they won’t commit.

🔁 MACRO Leadership Connection
In MACRO, motivation fuels the “Assign” step, but it also primes your coaching. AMP helps you understand what kind of support someone might need: more trust, more challenge, or more connection to the mission.
