Awareness, Beliefs, Connection: Three Keys to ME

Why do leaders stumble? Often, it’s because they operate on autopilot—reacting to situations out of habit, clinging to old beliefs, or failing to connect authentically with those around them. The good news is that leadership growth can be distilled into three essential practices: awareness, beliefs, and connection.

Robin Graham and Kathy Hagler describe these as the ABCs of ME, the first step in their murmuration framework. Awareness is the practice of noticing what triggers you. Are you caught in fear? Do you shut down when facing conflict?

Becoming conscious of these patterns is the first move toward change.

Beliefs are the mental anchors that either limit or empower us. Many leaders are stuck in “either/or” thinking: I’m either in control or I’m out of control.

By shifting to “both/and” thinking, we allow ourselves to see new possibilities: I can let others contribute, and the team will be stronger. I can admit I don’t know everything, and still lead well.

Connection is the ability to align with yourself—mind, body, and spirit—so that your interactions with others are authentic. When you practice presence, listen deeply, and connect inwardly, you connect outwardly in more meaningful ways.

The ABCs of ME remind us that personal growth is leadership growth. By practicing awareness, reshaping beliefs, and cultivating connection, leaders not only strengthen themselves, but they also prepare the way for collaboration that is resilient, compassionate, and leaderful.
